What is Asthma?

Asthma is chronic inflammatory response of respiratory tract. Some environmental factors, mainly dust and dirt contained therein, may lead to increased bronchial reactivity and bronchoconstriction relieved by asthma inhalers. In addition, in asthma development major role is played by genetic predisposition.

Asthma is one of the most common chronic respiratory disorders, its percentage among adults is about 5%. Among athletes its amount is even higher – probably 10-20%.

Acute asthma attack can be caused by a variety of stimuli:

  • contaminated dust entering lungs;
  • exposure to certain chemicals or animals;
  • taking certain medications (eg, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs);
  • viral infections;
  • psychological stress.

It is also well known that intense exercise can cause asthma symptoms, defined as “exercised induced asthma” (EIA). Inhalation of large amounts of cold, dry air, which leads to development of bronchial edema, can play a key role in asthma development in athletes involved in winter activities.

Most often athletes suffer from exercised-induced asthma who train hard trying to improve body endurance. The high frequency of exercised-induced asthma occurs in swimmers, possibly due to inhalation of chlorine vapor, which is a famous provocative chemical agent.

There are various respiratory system diseases including asthma. Its seizures occur in case of contact of foreign body or some allergen, cold or humid air, resulting from physical exertion, causing mucosal irritation in airways followed by airways offensive blocking and as a result suffocation. This state became known as asthma.

Free breathing in this disease is a happy moment for patient which may be granted by inhalers for asthma. When an attack takes place bronchi provokes spasm, lumen is narrowing, impeding free flow of air. Now more than half of all cases of asthma is diagnosed in children under age of 10 years. Most often, there is a disease in men. Also, doctors say this disease has predominantly genetic character. Asthma is the most common among smokers.

In most cases, for patients with asthma it is completely impossible to predict disease’s duration and severity. Sometimes attacks are considered to be threatening for human health and life, if medical care is provided not timely.

Asthma symptoms can be:

  • wheezing;
  • sense of panic;
  • difficulty with exhalation;
  • sweating;
  • painless tightness in chest;
  • dry cough.

Severe asthma is characterized by the following symptoms:

  • it is difficult to finish phrase because severe shortness of breath is observed;
  • wheezing becomes almost inaudible, because quite a little bit amount of air passes through airways;
  • lack of oxygen leads to blue lips, tongue, fingers and toes;
  • turbid consciousness and comaVentolin and Advair for ASTHMA
